How £250k legal services business tripled sales and turned a small loss into a £135,000 profit within a year
When I first met this business owner, he was tired in that way only business ownership creates. Seriously frustrated.
He’d created the legal services business from scratch and built the sales up to £250,000 a year.
He was proud of the fast turnaround and high-quality work.
However, despite working harder than ever, the business was still making a loss (albeit a small one). Cash was starting to become a juggling act to pay the bills.
And most frustrating of all, he couldn’t put his finger on why.
It started by creating clarity before creating growth...
We created a simple, clear 12-month financial plan.
It was designed to be a practical roadmap that showed where the business was heading if nothing changed and what could happen if the right levers were pulled.
Once the numbers were laid out clearly, the two issues in the business jumped off the page.
- Pricing was far too low
- Sales conversion was far weaker than it should have been
Nothing complicated.
Nothing dramatic.
Just two quiet leaks steadily draining a lot of profit every single month.
The Plan: To fix these profit problems...
Step 1: Fixing the Pricing Problem (Without scaring customers away)
The business was charging £50 per hour.
In this industry, that’s low.
The problem wasn’t just the number, it was the signal it sent.
Low prices were attracting price-sensitive customers who cared more about cheap than quality, while quietly repelling the very clients the business really wanted.
The goal was to reposition.
Language across the website and sales conversations shifted away from “cheap” and “low cost” and towards “affordable and high-quality”.
Then the price increased – first to £60, and just two months later to £70.
A 40% increase in less than eight weeks.
Most owners expect resistance at this point – except there wasn’t any.
Step 2:Turning Leads into Sales (Without spending more on marketing)
It soon became apparent that there wasn’t really a sales process – certainly not one which was consistently followed. Leads were followed up “when possible”, often days later, by which point interest had cooled.
The team then spent time chasing people who were no longer engaged, burning both energy and marketing spend.
We recommended three simple changes:
- A clear process to follow up new leads quickly
- Clear expectations for the team on response time
- Weekly tracking of conversion rates, reviewed together
Despite the price rises, conversion increased from a weak mid-teens figure to well above where it had ever been before.
The Results: Huge increase in Sales and Profit
Within 12 months, monthly sales tripled – from £20,000 to £60,000.
Instead of barely breaking even, the business was generating over £15,000 of profit every single month and still climbing.
More importantly, the owner felt a mix of relief and elation that the business was finally heading in the right direction.
Key Takeaway
This wasn’t about working harder or chasing the silver bullet.
It was about clarity.
Knowing which numbers mattered and then having the confidence to act on them.
